| Title | Orpheus & Eurydice (Ancient Theatre Series) |
| Synopsis |
ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE: In the Greek myth, Orpheus, allowed to rescue his beloved Eurydice from Hades, lost her again when he was unable to obey the god's warning not to look back at her as he led her up from the Underworld. The myth provided the subject for a major reform of operatic practice by the composer Christoph Gluck in the 18th Century. His opera was in turn adapted by Adolphe Appia "the father of the modern theatre" - for a groundbreaking demonstration of Appia's revolutionary theories of staging in a renowned production of 1913: a fusion of acting, music, lighting, and sets that ushered in a new form of theatrical art. In this program, the University of Warwick Chamber Orchestra and Chorus presents the opera in a production directly inspired by that so memorably created by Appia and Jaques-Dalcroze, a century ago. |
