Title Bush Law (Message Stick)
Synopsis This program is an exploration of the potential for cooperation between traditional Aboriginal law and the mainstream Australian criminal justice system in reducing violent crime in remote Aboriginal communities. Despite countless government initiatives and billions of dollars invested in attempts to reduce it, violent crime in the Northern Territory Aboriginal population is at an all time high. Many within the judicial system believe this is because there are two legal systems in the Territory. One has existed for 40,000 years, the other, which doesn't acknowledge traditional ways, is just 200 years old. And while only mainstream Australian law is legally recognised, the simple truth is that Aboriginal people living in remote Australia pay more attention to Aboriginal law. (ABC TV)
