The sinking of HMAS Sydney was the worst single loss ever suffered by the Australian navy, and the wreck of the ship was recently recovered off the coast of Western Australia. The memorial service was attended by NSW Governor Marie Bashir, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Chief of Navy Russ Shalders, who joined family members of those lost in battle with German mercantile raider Kormoran in November 1941.
